Captain’s message 2018

After playing Rickmansworth golf course for many years, my dad (Peter), brother (Lee) and I decided to join the club in the start of the 2016 season. Being a new member it was a great honour to be asked by Peter to be his Vice Captain in 2017 and to be the Captain of Rickmansworth Golf Club in 2018.

My family have been associated with Rickmansworth Golf Club for over 50 years. My grandad and his two brothers were members in the 1960s, with my great uncle Albert Bartlett being Captain exactly 50 years ago, in 1968. This is also the second time my dad has been a member as he was a junior member during this time.

Huge congratulations to Peter Maestas who captained the club in 2017. He has done a fantastic job, and I would like to say thank you and I hope to be able to follow in his footsteps and do the same this year.

I also would like to introduce this year’s Vice-Captain, Jake Jacobson. Jake will be helping me this year, and I’m sure will make a great Captain in 2019. I would also like to wish both the seniors and ladies Captains a fantastic season this year.

A mention must go to Jon Darby and his team. They are doing a fantastic job in the pro shop and looking after the course and I look forward to continue working with them this year.

Playing team golf in the club matches was new to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed the friendly competition against the other clubs. This was a great way as a new member to get to know the other members. For those members who have supported the club matches, I would like to ask for your support again this year. Any new members who would be interested in playing in the club matches, the matches are played in a friendly manner and are a good opportunity to play some different local courses. If interested please contact me or keep a look out on the club notice board and diary on the website.

As a captain I would like the general feel to be a “club” so I would like ask members to support the Rickmansworth Golf Course Pro Shop and The Fairway Inn. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and you will find the other members in there both before and after their rounds.

My Captain’s Charity is Bloodwise. My brother Lee, was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2015. I am pleased to say that he has the all clear now, this due to research that has been done and needs to continue to help improve future knowledge and treatments. Bloodwise have changed the world for people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders – but they won’t stop until every single one of the 38,000 people diagnosed with a blood cancer each year survives and can live their lives to the full.

You can support the Captain’s Charity by donating at my Captain’s day, or by visiting this link

I hope as a club we can have fantastic year of golf in 2018, and I hope see you on the course!

Captain’s Half Year Update

Captain’s day 2017:

Firstly, it was fantastic to see so many of the members out for Captain’s day, you really made the day positively fantastic, so pat yourselves on the back as we also raised £546.60 for Cancer Research UK. So a BIG, BIG, thank you to all who very generously gave up your time, and cash, to make the day a great success. I would also like to say a special thank you to Steve Milligan who setup the Active Leader Board for the day, which made scoring simple and in real time.

Friendly Matches:

We are now starting to play the second round of our friendly matches with Meyrick Park, Aylesbury Park and Richmond Park. Unfortunately we have had to postpone the return match v Meyrick Park, this match will now be played when the date has been re-arranged. We are about to play Aylesbury Park, maybe for the last time as HS2 will be digging up their golf course in the not too distant future. Rickmansworth is doing well in these competitions and with your support we will be victorious.

Herts Friendly League Matches:

The Herts Friendly League is also rolling into the second half of the season and Rickmansworth will be hosting several clubs over the next 5 weeks, so we have a very busy July and early August. I hope that the excellent support I have had so far this year, will continue over this 5 week busy period and beyond, so we can complete a very hectic schedule over these next few weeks. You can check the Rickmansworth league results by visiting the Little Hay Golf Club pages and clicking on the “Herts Friendly League” button at the bottom left of the page.

NAPGC Hawtree Match:

This was the first of the NAPGC matches, which is a Mixed Greensomes Stableford competition and this year it was played away at Haste Hill Golf Club. Unfortunately this year we did not go through to the next round but we will be back next year to perhaps go further in this competition.

NAPGC Bourne-Vanneck Shield and Cup:

This is a Men’s Club Team Championship match, Rickmansworth fielded an A team (low handicaps) and a B team (mid Handicaps). The A team was doing well but got pipped at the last and finished fourth, which is a very good result considering there was a high standard of competition. Ricky can also take away the feel good factor of posting the lowest nett round of the day out of all competitors. So, once again, we will be back next year to try again.

NAPGC Clapham Common Platinum Shield and Ellis Cup 2017:

Rickmansworth was victorious over Farnham Park which has given us an additional challenge of organising the next match v Ruislip within the required time scales of 23rd of July. We now have a good team for this match, and while it will be very challenging, we hope to come through and progress to the next round.

Captains Note:

Seems that this year is flying past and no sooner did my Captaincy start, it is now in the second half of the season. I have had great support from all the players so far this year, so a big thank you from the Captain for your time and some excellent scoring in the Club Matches. I am also very glad to see that we are getting quite a few new members and I hope that they will enjoy the club, the competitions, and the comradeship that I have since I joined in 2012, I think, the time has gone so quickly. Lastly, I wish you all a very good second half of the golfing season and hope to see you on the course, or at the Fairway Inn for a chat and a coffee.

New Captains drive in on Club Day

2016 Captains Graham Farmer and Sherril Bryden took to the 1st tee on Saturday afternoon to officially ‘drive in’ up the famous first hole. A big crowd gathered and cheered them on, fresh from playing in Club Day 2016.

Captain’s News

The season is now well under way and I would like to thank you for all the support that I and my vice-captain Peter have had in club matches. It makes our job so much easier when we have lots of support so please continue putting your names down, it is much appreciated. We have had a great start to the season winning the first three Herts Friendly League matches, the last one being away at Little Hay, a great result. We also had a good result at our annual friendly match, away at Meyrick Park, which finished 3-3 giving us a great advantage in the return leg at home. Unfortunately, we couldn’t replicate the success of last year in the Clapham Common losing in the first round to a strong Wexham Park team by just 3 points.

Welcome from our new Ladies Captain

Welcome to Rickmansworth Golf Club Ladies Section.

This is a small – almost elite group of ladies, who are very welcoming and passionate about sharing their love of golf. While we may not have all the style, elegance or facilities as some of our neighbours, we do offer very affordable golf on a challenging course and are every bit as competitive offering a full LGU and CONGU programme of medals, competitions and matches. We also offer a social life with a monthly Nine and Dine – Nine holes of golf and a 2 course supper as well as a variety of social events over the year.

I’m Ann Loughman (aka Ann-Maria) and will be the Lady Captain at Ricky this year. Like many female golfers I came to golf later in life as my children were leaving home and I approached the twilight of my working life. Following my retirement from full time work I joined Rickmansworth Golf Club as a very rookie golfer four years ago. Now playing off 31, I still feel a novice golfer having joined the club four years ago so rather like the Men’s Captain I am rather surprised at my rapid promotion to these heady heights. This is due entirely to the lady members who have mentored me, encouraged me, reminded me of the rules and generally guided me so that my game has improved. Thank you ladies.

As I look to the year ahead I hope we have a season of fun and friendly golf with good weather, some movements in the handicaps, greater integration with the Men’s and Seniors Sections and who knows we may even buck the trend and gain some new members.

My chosen charity this year is Alzheimer’s Association as a tribute to my Mum, Auntie and Uncle and I am holding my Captain’s Day on 1st July.

Finally I wish to thank June Poppleton our outgoing Captain for her work over the past twelve months and giving me some insight into the Captain’s role. Thanks also to Sherril Bryden for agreeing to be my Vice Captain so shortly after completing her Captaincy in 2013.

If you are reading this as a non-member and would like some more information about our ladies section please email me on

Welcome from our new Club Captain….

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I’m Danny Simmonds your new Club Captain for 2015. I only joined the Club in 2013 so feel very privileged to have risen to be your Captain in such a short period of time. I started playing golf about ten years ago and have enjoyed it immensely. I have been a member of Grim’s Dyke and a Captain at Oxhey Park in my time, so I hope to bring some of what I’ve learned to the role.

I would like to thank our 2014 Captain Stefan for making me his vice, and making this year as Captain possible. It looks like I’ve a big pair of shoes to fill as there have been many successful previous Captains, but I’m sure I can turn to them when I need some extra advice. Helping me this year will be my Vice Captain, Graham Farmer. I feel quite lucky to have got him, I am sure he will make a great Captain for 2016. I want to wish Ann Loughman, the 2015 Ladies Captain, all the best for her year guiding the ladies through it. Also I would like to thank the Tuesday club, Ricky regulars and the weekend mob for making my playing time very enjoyable, I have certainly played with a few characters.

My Charity this year will be in aid of Cancer Research. Having had Hodgkin’s lymphoma myself and have gone through chemotherapy and radio therapy, it’s close to my heart. I know first hand how this effects people’s lives and their families. Some of our own members have gone through this and how concerned for them we were, and I’m sure we all know someone who has had cancer. So I’m sure you will support my charity and my Captains day, which will be on the 7th of June. There will be a B.B.Q and prizes for both members and guests.

I hope to see you all out on the course and enjoying yourselves, I would also like to ask for everyone’s help in the club matches – please see where you can play and sign up in the locker room. Thank you
