Club Captain Stefan Kunka’s welcome message

Stefan Kunka was officially voted in as the new Club Captain for 2014/15. Here’s his official welcome to all members:

The start of the 2014/15 season sees me as this year’s captain. Beginning the game at the tender age of 50, I’ve been a member at the club for just over 5 years. Like many of you I’m constantly trying to improve my game and am looking forward to the season ahead.

I was still learning the game when I was given the opportunity to play for the club by captains John Jones, Denis Curran and Dave Watson and last year was vice captain to Mick Rogers, someone who always sees the bright side of life. I hope to give some of you a similar opportunity as the club plays in matches throughout the season. This year my vice is the very able Danny Simmonds who I hope can inspire some quality into our team performances. Danny will make an excellent captain next year.

Last season was memorable for the fact that Rickmansworth won the Bourne-Vanneck Trophy for the first time in the club’s history. Congratulations were rightly given to the team that stormed the qualifier and won the final by a distance. That will be a hard act to follow. Good luck to the ladies and seniors as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

The committee is hoping to change the format of a number of club events and we hope this will improve the experience of club members. Jim and the team in the pro shop are always helpful and you will save money on your golf supplies if you speak to them politely. You might want to work on your game by arranging a lesson or two with the club pro, Jon Darby. You’ll not only score better but have a more enjoyable round of golf as you learn to eradicate those persistent bad habits. I encourage you to use the golf club website to keep in touch with all club matters throughout the year.

Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust is my chosen charity, a charity involved in a number of projects throughout the local community. I hope you can help me support them through my organised events this year.

So let’s enjoying playing a few holes on summer evenings, the fading warm sunlight providing a backdrop for ever needed practice. A respectable opening shot on the first providing the start to a memorable round on a bright sunny morning. Good luck and best wishes to all club members this year.

Welcome from our new Ladies Captain

New Ladies Captain for 2014/15 – June Poppleton was officially accepted into her new role at last night’s AGM. Here’s her welcome message to members:

May I introduce myself as the new Ladies’ Captain. I have lived in Rickmansworth for 47 years, played golf for 7 years, have passed my 3 score years and 10 but am still in my mind 35. Several of our children and grandchildren play golf and my grandson’s advice is “Hit it harder, Granny” – if only I could! My husband is up at Moor Park. I do play there occasionally; but I wouldn’t swop it for our Tricky Ricky.

I am looking forward to taking up my duties as Ladies Captain with both excitement and trepidation.  Excitement anticipating the many new experiences and new people I hope to meet and enjoy in the coming year and trepidation following on the excellent captaincy of Sherril. I take this opportunity of thanking her for all her hard work and the enthusiasm she brought to all our activities..

I hope to work in closer co-operation with the men’s section of the club and hope they have the same aim.

We are always ready to welcome new members and would point out beginners are just as welcome as established players.  We have all had to swing a golf club for the first time so if there are ladies out there who would like to take up golf come along and enjoy the companionship and the fun. Our days are Monday and Wednesday at 10.00 am.

May I wish everyone involved in the club a successful and very happy year.

Thanks to Anthony Light

The Club would like to thank Anthony Light for organising a very successful tour to Magaluf in Mallorca.

Excellent golf courses, a good hotel and great weather all added up to a good time for the 16 Ricky golfers who made the autumn trip to the Spanish sunshine. The Lads even spent a great night in Benny Hill’s bar watching England clinch qualification to the World Cup Finals, a memorable evening that will live long in the memory.

Member’s questionnaire – 1st replies

As most of the members will know, we recently asked the membership some questions about the Club. We had many responses which we thank you all for. The first few questions related generally to Club social events, but the last question was for Members to give suggestions on improving the Club. Plenty of suggestions were received, but some related to the course & clubhouse areas. These points were put to Jim McLeod, complex manager and below is his reply. The committee is actively working on other suggestions relating to club affairs and will report back in due course.
