2017/18 Stag Trophy updated standings

Here’s the latest standings for the 2017/18 Stag Trophy for all you mid-weekers. Note, the December Medal has not played yet – rearranged for Tuesday 30th Jan. Can anyone mount a late charge at 4-time Stag winner Gerald Hirst in the closing rounds?

A reminder of how the scoring works, especially for our new members.

Each monthly medal allocates points on your nett score if you score a 66 or better:

66 = 1 point65 = 2 points64 = 3 points63 = 4 points62 or better = 5 points.

Captain’s message 2018

After playing Rickmansworth golf course for many years, my dad (Peter), brother (Lee) and I decided to join the club in the start of the 2016 season. Being a new member it was a great honour to be asked by Peter to be his Vice Captain in 2017 and to be the Captain of Rickmansworth Golf Club in 2018.

My family have been associated with Rickmansworth Golf Club for over 50 years. My grandad and his two brothers were members in the 1960s, with my great uncle Albert Bartlett being Captain exactly 50 years ago, in 1968. This is also the second time my dad has been a member as he was a junior member during this time.

Huge congratulations to Peter Maestas who captained the club in 2017. He has done a fantastic job, and I would like to say thank you and I hope to be able to follow in his footsteps and do the same this year.

I also would like to introduce this year’s Vice-Captain, Jake Jacobson. Jake will be helping me this year, and I’m sure will make a great Captain in 2019. I would also like to wish both the seniors and ladies Captains a fantastic season this year.

A mention must go to Jon Darby and his team. They are doing a fantastic job in the pro shop and looking after the course and I look forward to continue working with them this year.

Playing team golf in the club matches was new to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed the friendly competition against the other clubs. This was a great way as a new member to get to know the other members. For those members who have supported the club matches, I would like to ask for your support again this year. Any new members who would be interested in playing in the club matches, the matches are played in a friendly manner and are a good opportunity to play some different local courses. If interested please contact me or keep a look out on the club notice board and diary on the website.

As a captain I would like the general feel to be a “club” so I would like ask members to support the Rickmansworth Golf Course Pro Shop and The Fairway Inn. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and you will find the other members in there both before and after their rounds.

My Captain’s Charity is Bloodwise. My brother Lee, was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2015. I am pleased to say that he has the all clear now, this due to research that has been done and needs to continue to help improve future knowledge and treatments. Bloodwise have changed the world for people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders – but they won’t stop until every single one of the 38,000 people diagnosed with a blood cancer each year survives and can live their lives to the full.

You can support the Captain’s Charity by donating at my Captain’s day, or by visiting this link https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/martin-bartlett6

I hope as a club we can have fantastic year of golf in 2018, and I hope see you on the course!

Martin Bartlett

Captains Away Day 2017 played on 08-Sep-2017

This year’s Captain’s Away Day was played at The Old Fold Manor Golf Club in Barnet, Herts. The club has a long history and when Old Fold opened, life expectancy in England was 50. Women had no vote, there were 5 dollars to the pound, cigarettes were one old penny for 20, a pint was 1p, and the biggest single class of employment was domestic service – there were over 2 million butlers, footmen and maids, etc. That was 1910. This course is also used for The Open Qualification, so it boasts a high pedigree. We were expecting 24 players on the day, two could not make it due to personal circumstances and one turned up unexpectedly, so we had a healthy 23 players on the day. Unfortunately the weather I ordered, sunshine and 23 degrees, was replaced with heavy clouds and regular bouts of rain. This however, did not dampen the spirits of the 23 golfers who took to the course at 10:02. Following a swift change of clothing into something more respectable, with some wearing the full suit and tie ensemble, came the end of round meal of ham, egg and chips. There were several competitions on the day, including Nearest the Pin, Nearest the Pin in Two Shots and Longest Drive, as well as the winner’s prize, runner-up and third place. The following golfers were the winners on the day:

Overall Winner: Martin Bartlett with 42 points

Runner-Up: Jake Jacobson with 39 points

Third Place: David Wills on count-back with 34 points

Nearest the Pin: Peter Bartlett

Nearest the Pin in Two Shots: Martin Bartlett

Longest Drive: Martin Bartlett

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for supporting the 2017 Captain’s Away Day, and for making it a very enjoyable event.

Peter Maestas, Captain 2017

John Ryder RIP

Rickmansworth Golf Club is saddened to pass on the news that one of it’s long serving members, John Ryder, has passed away. John was Captain of the Club in 1984 and then took on the position of Club Chairman the following year in 1985. He remained in this position for a remarkable 25 years until his final year at the helm in 2009. However, even that wasn’t enough service, and for the next six years John was the Club President. He was also one of only 12 Honorary Life Members.

John’s funeral will take on Tuesday 3rd October at 2.40 pm at West Herts Crematorium. There will be a reception afterwards at the Fairway Inn.

Change of date for the Daily Mail foursomes qualifier

Can members please note that the date for the Daily Mail foursomes has been changed to the weekend of 28/29 October, so it will not clash with the pro shop’s memorial golf day for Jim McLeod on Saturday 21st October.

Vikash & Jake win prizes at NAPGC Championship!

Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire – Sunday 30th July.

Rickmansworth had 2 qualifiers for the annual NAPGC Men’s Championship, an 18 hole medal tournament played over the excellent Bracken course at Woodhall Spa, in Lincolnshire. Heavy overnight rain had eased in the early hours, but left the course playing very long. Playing from the white tees the course measures over 6500 yds, but the regulars all commented that they had not seen Woodhall playing so long in many a year. The CSS went up from 72 to 75 so it shows it was a tough year!

Vikash Patel was our representative in division 3 of the tournament (for players with handicaps 13-20). Vikash played a great round and recovered well from 2 balls O.O.B. on the long par 3 5th hole. Coming home with a nett 77, Vikash won the Piccadilly Trophy for division 3 on count back from 2 other players. A fantastic result for Vikash! And he certainly celebrated it in the bar afterwards!

The ever lively Jake Jacobson was our rep in division 4 (21-28’s), and he thrashed the opposition in his division to win by a mere 11 shots! Jake used his time wisely before the round and warmed up well on the range, and then plotted his way round the Bracken course in style. I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about this in the days and weeks ahead!
