Captain’s Half Year Update

Captain’s day 2017:

Firstly, it was fantastic to see so many of the members out for Captain’s day, you really made the day positively fantastic, so pat yourselves on the back as we also raised £546.60 for Cancer Research UK. So a BIG, BIG, thank you to all who very generously gave up your time, and cash, to make the day a great success. I would also like to say a special thank you to Steve Milligan who setup the Active Leader Board for the day, which made scoring simple and in real time.

Friendly Matches:

We are now starting to play the second round of our friendly matches with Meyrick Park, Aylesbury Park and Richmond Park. Unfortunately we have had to postpone the return match v Meyrick Park, this match will now be played when the date has been re-arranged. We are about to play Aylesbury Park, maybe for the last time as HS2 will be digging up their golf course in the not too distant future. Rickmansworth is doing well in these competitions and with your support we will be victorious.

Herts Friendly League Matches:

The Herts Friendly League is also rolling into the second half of the season and Rickmansworth will be hosting several clubs over the next 5 weeks, so we have a very busy July and early August. I hope that the excellent support I have had so far this year, will continue over this 5 week busy period and beyond, so we can complete a very hectic schedule over these next few weeks. You can check the Rickmansworth league results by visiting the Little Hay Golf Club pages and clicking on the “Herts Friendly League” button at the bottom left of the page.

NAPGC Hawtree Match:

This was the first of the NAPGC matches, which is a Mixed Greensomes Stableford competition and this year it was played away at Haste Hill Golf Club. Unfortunately this year we did not go through to the next round but we will be back next year to perhaps go further in this competition.

NAPGC Bourne-Vanneck Shield and Cup:

This is a Men’s Club Team Championship match, Rickmansworth fielded an A team (low handicaps) and a B team (mid Handicaps). The A team was doing well but got pipped at the last and finished fourth, which is a very good result considering there was a high standard of competition. Ricky can also take away the feel good factor of posting the lowest nett round of the day out of all competitors. So, once again, we will be back next year to try again.

NAPGC Clapham Common Platinum Shield and Ellis Cup 2017:

Rickmansworth was victorious over Farnham Park which has given us an additional challenge of organising the next match v Ruislip within the required time scales of 23rd of July. We now have a good team for this match, and while it will be very challenging, we hope to come through and progress to the next round.

Captains Note:

Seems that this year is flying past and no sooner did my Captaincy start, it is now in the second half of the season. I have had great support from all the players so far this year, so a big thank you from the Captain for your time and some excellent scoring in the Club Matches. I am also very glad to see that we are getting quite a few new members and I hope that they will enjoy the club, the competitions, and the comradeship that I have since I joined in 2012, I think, the time has gone so quickly. Lastly, I wish you all a very good second half of the golfing season and hope to see you on the course, or at the Fairway Inn for a chat and a coffee.

Rickmansworth v Little Hay HFL Match Report – played on 22-Apr-2017

The expectation this year was high as Rickmansworth beat Little Hay in our previous away match the year before, so an away win this year would set Ricky up for a good HFL season. The weather was fine and the enthusiasm was high, and so we teed off. First match came in with a draw with 43 points, very evenly matched and there was never more than a point either way the whole way around. Match 2 result was a big win for Ricky with 45 points to Little Hay’s 35 points, a 10 point lead was established and it was looking good. Match 3 was a win to Little Hay with 41 points to Ricky’s 39 points, Rickmansworth still holding an 8 point lead with 2 more matches to come in. Match 4 was a slightly larger win for Little Hay with 44 points to Ricky’s 38 points, getting closer but Rickmansworth still holding a very slender lead of 2 points. Once again, it was down to the last match. Rickmansworth’s team came in with 41 points, an excellent away score, unfortunately Little Hay came in with 44 points which gave Little Hay a 3 point advantage in the match, which also gave Little Hay a 1 point win on the day with a score of 207 points, to Rickmansworth’s 206 points. Well done to David Watson and Martin Bartlett who won the day’s sweep, and a big thank you to all the players for your continued support.

Message from our new Captain for 2017

It is a pleasure and honour to be the Captain of Rickmansworth Golf Club in 2017. I have been playing golf at “Tricky Ricky”, on and off, for the better part of 27 years now, and can still remember the bunker in front of the 15th green, which I must say made it an extremely difficult hole and many a Hamlet moment spent there…

A big Thank You goes out to Graham Farmer who captained the club in 2016 he did a fantastic job, and I hope to be able to follow in his footsteps and do the same this year.

I also want to introduce this year’s Vice-Captain, Martin Bartlett, who will be helping me along the way, and I’m sure will make a great Captain in 2018. Not forgetting the Seniors Captain and Ladies Captain, I wish them both a fantastic season this year. I also want to mention Jon Darby, our Golf Complex Manager, and his team. They will be looking after the golf course for us this year.

For those of you who regularly support the club matches, I ask for your support again this year and hope that together we can have a great season. For new members who might be interested in playing in the club matches, these are played in a very friendly manner, and it is also a great way to play a variety of different courses. Should you like to participate in the club matches, please feel free to contact me, or look out for the upcoming matches on the club notice boards.

The RGC Pro Shop, and the 19th hole also known as The Fairway Inn, will also need your support this year. You can purchase golfing “stuffs” before your round at the pro shop, and reflect on your efforts after the round at The Fairway Inn. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and it’s usually full of RGC members who regularly stop for drink and a snack.

This year’s Captains Charity is Cancer Research UK, they do what it says on the tin, conduct research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Their research activities are carried out in institutes, universities and hospitals across the whole of the UK. Their aim is simple, to reduce the number of deaths from cancer. You can support the Captains Charity by donating at the Captains day, or by visiting this link which I have setup in case you cannot attend Captains Day, and would still like to donate.

So, let’s all a fantastic year of golf in 2017, and I’ll see you on the course!
