Ricky Race Night – a fantastic success!

Rickmansworth Golf Club held a Race Night on Friday 24th Feb at The Fairway Inn and by all accounts it was a huge success. There were 12 races on the night, which saw a lively crowd shout home their horses, and also the opportunity for ‘punters’ to buy their own horse in any selected race for a bonus payout!

Additionally there were two of the races that were deemed ‘auction’ races where Dave Miles, the MC for the night, encouraged the crowd to bid for all 8 horses (or pigs in the 2nd auction race!) Thanks to everyone who generously upped the bidding.

A massive thank you to Andy Pullin for making a special trip down from Norfolk to organise the Tote betting. Grant and his team did a super job of keeping us fed with a hot selection of food, Chicken Curry and Vegetarian Lasagne, and there were certainly many takers for seconds!

Overall, a huge £492 was raised for the Club – well done to everyone involved and thank you to all who supported this event. I’m sure this will become a regular feature.

Captain’s Corner

A Message From The Captain

As we say goodbye to 2011 under Denis Curran’s captaincy, I can reflect that it has been one of the most successful years in our Club’s history and I congratulate him on a fantastic job, culminating in winning the Ellis Cup at the national final of the ‘Clapham Common Shield’, and yet another year having retained all of the trophies we play for in the inter-club friendly matches.

I have enjoyed my year as Vice-Captain and my whole-hearted thanks go to Denis. I’m extremely proud to now be taking over as your Captain, and I welcome Mick Rogers to be my Vice Captain.

Last year’s success has certainly given me an awful lot to aim at and I am relishing the opportunity
to continue the Club’s recent superb form.

Thanks must go to Chris Nunn, our out-going professional for his tremendous support of the Club in the past 12 months and his vision of how the course could be and has been improved.

We now welcome his successor James McLeod to the course and look forward to working with James as the year progresses.

At this time each year the ground staff always get a mention, but I’d like to make a special thank you to them by expressing just how much their continued hard work is both appreciated and well noticed, in particular the recent improvements to the 12th and 17th holes.

My Captain’s Charity for 2012 will be Michael Sobell Hospice, at Mount Vernon. Please support this very worthwhile cause as best you can.

I am very pleased to be the first Captain of Rickmansworth Golf Club that has the facility of a website, and my thanks go in particular to John Bradley and his son James who have driven this project on. John’s enthusiasm is infectious – and James’ web knowledge is invaluable and sincerely appreciated! Please have a good look around the website, we hope it will bring us closer together as a club and keep you all well informed of future Club events and upcoming competitions. If you have any suggestions please let us know.

I take this opportunity to wish you all a successful year’s golf – but most importantly have fun and enjoy!
