Re-Scheduled Mike Murphy Cup Date…

The Mike Murphy Cup that was postponed due to a flooded course on the weekend of 28/29 April, has been re-scheduled for the weekend of 16/17 June. This is an Order of Merit event and is of medal format.

Honours even in Haste Hill clash….

Today, Rickmansworth played host to local rivals Haste Hill in a ‘derby match’ Men’s friendly. Conditions were perfect for golf, 25c with a light breeze, and a hard fought battle ensued. The visitors got off to a great start by winning the first 3 matches out, but Rickmansworth clawed back the deficit thanks to wins from Denis Curran & Dominic Nichol (1up), Mick Gornicki & Ian Brown (6&5) and in the anchor match Dave Miles & Colin Timms (4&3). Well done guys, you pulled us out of a very large hole!

So, 3-3 as it stands at half time with the return leg away at Haste Hill on 25th August. I will endeavour to put out as strong a team as possible for the return game in the quest of retaining the trophy.

My thanks as always for their support go to my team mates: Mike Watson, Mick Rogers, Tom Moore, Ian Lewis, Graham Jordan, and the aforementioned Denis Curran, Dominic Nichol, Mick Gornicki, Ian Brown, Dave Miles & Colin Timms.

Hawtree winning form continues…

On A Roll….

Rickmansworth took on Iver Golf Club on Sunday in a tricky looking tie in the 2nd round of the Hawtree Mixed Trophy. Conditions were decent and our home players certainly took advantage with some terrific scoring on the day to give us a healthy lead. Over at Iver things weren’t quite as smooth on the 9 hole course, but the 2 pairs did just enough to clinch a close battle, by 237 points – 234 points. Well done everyone who played and thank you for your excellent support;

At Iver: David Hirst, Mary Harris, Gerald Hirst & Sherril Bryden.

At Rickmansworth: Nick Symonds, Johanna Krantz, Rob Camilleri & Ciara O’Flanagan.

Now we await the winners of the Bird Hills v Little Hay tie for the 3rd round.

Clapham Common match

Rickmansworth were drawn against Farnham Park’s C team in the 1st round of the annual Clapham Common Shield tournament with the match arranged for Sunday 20th May. However, Farnham had to concede the match to us late on Saturday 19th due to a lack of players available for their team. Therefore we go through to the 2nd round, for a meeting with Thorney Park GC, which will be played in June.

I’d like to thank my team for their support so far and we look forward to the next round; Anthony Light, Harry Wallace, Munir Ahmed, Tom Wallace, Denis Curran, Ian Lewis, John Jones, Mick Rogers, Simon Jackson, Ian Brown & Mick Gornicki.

RGC perform well in TRDC Chairman’s Charity Day

Once again, Rickmansworth Golf Club was pleased to support the annual Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) Chairman’s Charity Classic, by entering 4 teams in the competition held at Rickmansworth Golf Course for the 16th time on Friday 11th May.

In testing conditions of a steady wind, and the course set up in terrific shape after the recent heavy rain, our teams all performed well – using the home advantage gained each week to good effect – and coming in with some good scores, but narrowly missing out on the spoils. Teams played in

Mike Watson wins Club Day!

Sunday saw the annual “Club Day” competition take place and the players were greeted to a sunny but breezy day at Rickmansworth. Dave Miles and Gary Sippetts were the honoury starters and saw everyone away from the 1st tee after pictures and interviews for “Ricky TV” !

Scoring proved to be quite tough in the windy conditions, but everyone seemed to enjoy the day – especially the unusual feature of having  9  nearest the pin holes!

Every competitor had a go at the special Captain’s Charity Bonus Hole – 2A – where Club Chairman Dave Miles edged out 2009 Captain Ian Lewis to the nearest the pin prize. Dave very kindly donated his £34 winnings on this hole to the Captain’s Charity (Michael Sobell Hospice) so £68 was raised. Thanks very much indeed Dave – that’s a great gesture. Thanks to every player who had a go at this bonus hole – it’s great to see 2A back in play every now n’ again!

And so to the main competition… Gerald Hirst out in the 3rd group set the pace with a terrific effort of 39points off his 11 handicap. Simon Jackson put in a very steady round and posted 36 points from his 7 handicap to claim 3rd place, but it was left to the penultimate group out where Mike Watson off 22 handicap turned in a super round with a 40 point haul to lift the Maud Banks Trophy. This was Mike’s return to the ‘winner’s enclosure’ after a long absence due to injury. Mike held his nerve over the last few holes knowing he was playing well, and concentrating on trying to finish off a good round. There was no hiding his delight, but also shock as to his achievement! As he said in his winner’s acceptance speech, “there’s no-one more surprised than me”. Well done Mike, keep up the good play!

  • Winner, Mike Watson, 40 points
  • 2nd place: Gerald Hirst, 39 points
  • 3rd place: Simon Jackson, 36 points

Thanks for all your support on Club Day. It’s our main golfing day of the year and one we shall continue to improve!

I must also thank Grant and his staff for the food served after golf, and Jim McLeod for his support behind the scenes. As ever, the committee did  a great job of arranging the day, Tom Moore & Roy Prue for supplying the prizes, John Bradley for his fantastic effort in selling loads of raffle tickets, Dave Miles and Gary Sippetts for their banter on the 1st tee, Dave’s effort in setting up a very neat and tidy scoreboard, and Gerald for filling in the scores and checking cards. A great team effort.
