Still time to enter into Saturday’s Capt v Sec match…

With no official competition this weekend at the Club, we have a special internal match taking place that’s open to all members – The Captain v The Secretary team match; making a return for the first time in a few years!

Seeing as it is Ryder Cup weekend, I’m sure there are a few more folks out there who would jump at the chance for a bit of team golf…?

Tee off is at 1pm on Saturday. A draw will be made prior to the start to see who will play in The Captain’s Team and who will represent Roy Prue in his Secretary’s Team. There’s no trophy up for grabs, just bragging rights for the evening!

The format is a singles Stableford with everyone’s score to count. The winning team will be the team with most points over all matches. Part of the deal is that the losing team pays for the winning team’s meal after the golf…. don’t worry- just £6 per head for a hot meal. So a good incentive to win for a free dinner!

Then to finish off the day, we have live coverage of The Ryder Cup in the bar.

There’s an entry sheet on the noticeboard but you can also call or text Dave (07921 409624) or Roy (07708 572132)

Narrow defeat at Aylesbury…

Rickmansworth’s last friendly match of the season took place on Saturday, visiting Aylesbury Park. On a nippy but beautifully sunny day we faced a different challenge to normal as Aylesbury’s course is everything that Rickmansworth isn’t : long, wide open, and large, flat greens.

After a full English breakfast served by our hosts, it was out to the course where the battle commenced. In the top match The Captain and Denis Curran took on Aylesbury’s Captain Graham Hicks and former Captain Martin Smith. In a great match, the momentum swung both ways, first with the visitors  taking an early 2 hole lead, then the hosts realing off 4 birdies to lead by 3 holes with just 4 to play. However, it was far from over and a stirring fightback was on with the Rickmansworth boys winning all 4 remaining holes to sneak a win by 1 hole. A terrific match, with great company – exactly how these matches are supposed to be. Aylesbury leveled the score on the day by taking the next match out, but Graham Jordan & Ian Brown took a well earned half in the 3rd match. The home team then took the next 2 matches to ensure the home win, but vice Captain Mick Rogers & Andrew Love stunned their opponents with some terrific play over the back 9 to win 4&2 in the anchor match and with it 49 points on the betterball swindle!

As ever, a great day was had by all at Aylesbury and although this is a relatively new club fixture, it is a firm favourite with many of our players.

Many thanks to all who played: Denis Curran, Tom Moore & Graham Dalvarez, Graham Jordan & Ian Brown, Mick Gornicki & Bob Horton, Graham Farmer & Rob Camilleri and Mick Rogers & Andrew Love. Well played.

The overall season result was Rickmansworth 7½-4½ Aylesbury Park.

Batchwood away: nice day – poor result !

Rickmansworth visited Batchwood Hall Golf Club on Saturday for a men’s section friendly match – our penultimate of the season. With glorious weather to play in, the scene was set for a good match – with the course at Batchwood playing fast and bouncy thanks to the recent good weather. The only problem was some of the greens could have done with a cut! In a late change to the format, instead of the normal 4-ball better ball matches our hosts suggested we played a better ball Stableford over all six matches, with the winner being the team with the most points.

Needless to say, Batchwood’s home advantage saw them over the line with a win by 244-230 points. There was some good scoring from the visitors with 42 points being the top score achieved by 3 pairs; Anthony Light & debutant Vikash Patel, Mick Rogers & Mick Gornicki and The Captain & Mike Watson. Anthony & Vikash landed the swindle money courtesy of a count back 23 points on the back 9.

Very many thanks to all who played in this match: Mike Watson, Mick Rogers & Mick Gornicki, Roy Prue & Colin Taylor, Denis Curran & Rob Camilleri, Anthony Light & Vikash Patel and Tom Moore & Graham Dalvarez.

Captain’s Day report

A big thank you to everyone who supported Captain’s Day this year. It was a really enjoyable day and everything went as well as it could have done – even the weather gave a helping hand and decided to give us sunshine all day!

I wanted the day to be fun, and I most certainly did have a lot of fun whilst raising a good deal of money for charity. Right from the start there was a lively atmosphere in the club house which kicked off proceedings, with players all enjoying their tea & bacon rolls. Thanks to Vice Captain Mick Rogers and laterly Dave Miles for helping me out on the morning by taking the entry fees. 42 players set out on a glorious morning and after just 2 holes they were greeted by the Captain and his “wing man” for the morning, former member Andy Pullin, on the tee of hole 2a for a “Beat The Captain Challenge” !

This hole although now not in regular use, to me sums Rickmansworth Golf Course up : short and tricky and at times, damn frustrating! I’m glad to say every player had a go at trying to Beat The Captain’s tee shot, but alas, only 8 of you did ! Well done to: Geoff Wood, Anthony Light, John Jackson, Graham Davies, Alan Eastwood, former member Ashley Pearce, Mike Watson and Ben Plumridge. All of these players won a sleeve of Srixon balls for their excellent shots! A big thank you to Andy who provided great company and as always a terrific sense of humour.

£34 was raised for Charity alone by this bit of fun – added to which another £49 was amassed by the sales of Mrs Watson’s home made cakes!

On to the main competition, and it was Anthony Light out in the 4th group of the day, who started the brightest with an eagle 3 at the 2nd hole shooting him in to the early lead, but a few dodgy holes around what some of us refer affectionately to as Amen Corner (10-11-12), put him back in the pack. However a final total of 38 points had Anthony as the clubhouse leader. New member Andy Love announced himself to a wider audience by also signing for a 38 point total and just beating Anthony on countback. Just as Andy was sweating about what he might have to say at the presentation, Stefan Kunka, playing in the very last group, returned and got home by a single point to win The Captain’s Prize with 39 points.

We had 11 ex-Captains of Rickmansworth playing and I am honoured to be in your company; Alec Franks (1982), John Ryder (1984), Tom Moore (1990), Roy Prue (1997), Dave Miles (2000), Rob Camilleri (2002), Graham Dalvarez (2005), Ian Brown (2007), Dave Hudd (2008), Ian Lewis (2009) and John Jones (2010).

  • Winner: Stefan Kunka, 39 points
  • 2nd place: Andy Love, 38 points
  • 3rd place: Anthony Light, 38 points
  • Best Front 9: Mick Rogers, 21 points
  • Best Back 9: Simon Jackson, 19 points
  • Best Ex-Captain: Tom Moore, 37 points
  • Wooden Spoon: Dave Higgs, 18 points
  • Nearest The Pin, Hole 7: Ben Plumridge
  • Nearest The Pin in 2 shots, Hole 9: John Jones
  • Nearest The Pin, Hole 13: Roy Prue
  • Nearest The Pin in 2 shots, Hole 18: Munir Ahmed

Thanks again for all your support, it really was a wonderful day and a total of £293 was raised for my charity: Michael Sobell House.

This brings the year’s total to £496 so far…

Clapham Team falls at final hurdle…

Rickmansworth took on local rivals Haste Hill on Saturday in the Area Final of The Clapham Common Shield. On a beautiful day for golf, sunny with a slight breeze, both teams were well charged up for the showdown that would see the winner progressing through to the National Final. Having had so much success recently it is with regret to report that although having played very well and amassing 220 points from our 6 pairings, we came up against a better team on the day who scored a whopping 234 points to ease past us and into the Final.

Our score of 220 was actually the 4th highest of the season in our Area, and is also the 2nd highest total this year to lose in the whole of this year’s Clapham Common tournament that covers 8 regions, so we can count ourselves unfortunate to run into a very good Haste Hill team at this stage. So after almost 3 years of Clapham matches this was our first defeat in the knock out stages.

Rickmansworth can be very proud of ourselves as we are punching well above our weight in NAPGC run tournaments in recent years. We of course will be back next year to have another run at the competition. I’m sure we will do well again in 2013 as this is clearly a format that we do well in.

I’m extremely proud of everyone who played this season including today: At Haste Hill: Dave Watson & Mick Gornicki, Ben Plumridge (making his Clapham debut) & John Jones, Harry Wallace & Denis Curran and at Rickmansworth: Anthony Light & Mick Rogers, Munir Ahmed & Ian Lewis, Graham Dalvarez & Ian Brown. Well done to you all, we played good golf.

Thanks for a great run, it’s been fun!

Mick Rogers claims prize at Men’s Championships…

Mick Rogers, Vice-Captain of Rickmansworth Golf Club, came 2nd in his division at the N.A.P.G.C. Men’s Championship National Final last Saturday. The event was once again held at the English Golf Union’s home course of Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire. Mick got off to a poor start, but rallied well around the turn and came home with a nett score of 75 on the par 72 Bracken Course that was good enough to claim the runners up position and the Piccadilly Trophy for his mantle piece.

Our other qualifier Anthony Light, played well too, but was ultimately undone by a plugged ball in a bunker that cost him a triple bogey and any chance of winning the overall Championship Trophy. Anthony shot a creditable 5 over par 77, to finish 5th of the 19 players in the top division, but was left with a taste of ‘what might have been’ had it not been for that touch of sandy mis-fortune. Well played to both – you have done Rickmansworth proud !
