The latest “Tuesday Club” away day meeting was held yesterday at our local neighbours Sandy Lodge GC. A terrific afternoon’s golf was had in glorious sunshine, with the last group back just making it before darkness fell! Well done yet again to organiser Colin Timms, who although unable to play in this event, was on hand to take care of proceedings. Colin stayed on for quite a while to walk some of the course and watch some of the good, bad and ugly shots!

  • Winner: Dave Watson – 39 pts
  • Runner Up: Mick Rogers – 38 pts
  • Best front 9: Shared between Gerald Hirst & Mick Rogers – 20 pts
  • Best back 9: Danny Simmonds
  • Nearest the pin (par 3) : Niall (guest of Grant)
  • Nearest the pin in 2 shots (par 4): Paul Roffe

Look out for the next Tuesday Club away day.

Ladies match success

On Wednesday the 19th September, our Ladies team played their first ever home match against Huntswood GC Ladies. The whole team played consistently well and the final result was Rickmansworth 4 Huntswood 0.

1st pontoon result of season…

The first Pontoon result of the new football season is as follows:

Ricky G.C. 1st Pontoon – Results for season 2013/14

Total prize fund of £148, (won in 4 weeks, @ 37 entries at £1)

Hole in one for Mary!

Mary Harris recorded her first ever hole-in-one at the weekend in her match against Ann Loughman. Mary struck an 8-iron up to the back right pin position on the par 3 7th hole in her Julie Curtis Cup match.

Her yellow ball ran up the green and nestled against the flag stick, keeping Mary guessing as to how close the ball was to the hole! However, she needn’t have worried too much as upon removing the stick the ball fell into the cup for that great feeling of the ultimate golf shot. Well done Mary!

Hammond Cup Final report…

The oldest of the club’s trophies is the Hammond Cup, first played for in 1944. Today, Sunday 22nd September saw the staging of this year’s final between Dave Watson (4 h’cap) and Roger Jones (23).  Humid conditions with a little drizzle greeted the two finalists on the 1st tee. Dave won the toss and made a quick start getting to 3 up through five holes. The solitary halve of the front nine came on the par 4 sixth, before Roger bounced back with wins on the 7th and 8th to reduce the deficit to just one hole.

The decisive move then came around the turn with Dave winning 3 of the next 4 holes from the 9th-12th, to re-take a 3-hole lead. The next two holes were traded one each, before the final two holes of the match were halved to close out a 3&2 victory for Dave.

Keeping it in the family…!

Two of the Club’s Major knockout finals were played yesterday, Friday 20th September. The Club Cup & The Carris Bowl have history dating back to 1946 and 1949 respectively. Each final was played over 36 holes as the ultimate test of match play golf. The course was in great shape befitting the two Major knockout finals with the greens being dressed & cut to make them a good speed. Add to that the fine weather and a good day was in prospect.

In the Carris Bowl, Ben Plumridge (6 hcap) was up against Graham Davies (14). A very tight affair ensued in the morning with Graham going in at the halfway stage after 18 holes at 1 up. After lunch in the afternoon session, Ben really showed his class with an excellent round of 69, to pip Graham 3&2 in an eagerly contested battle.

Ben was delighted to win his first Rickmansworth ‘Major’ after coming very close in the Club Championship in June. Commiserations to Graham, and congratulations to Ben, this will almost certainly be the first of many Major titles at Ricky!

In the 36 hole final of the Club Cup, our club Chairman Dave Miles (11) had a tough looking match against the club’s Secretary and present holder, Roy Prue (18). Having to concede 7 shots in each round to “Mr Steady Eddy”, meant The Chairman would have to be on form. On form he was, with an excellent performance in the morning session to put one hand on the trophy with a commanding 6 up lead to take into the afternoon round.

Another fine display in the afternoon meant Dave came through with a resounding 10&8 victory to wrestle the Club Cup away from Roy’s grasp.

This was a very proud day for our Club’s Chairman because he completed his set of Majors as only the Club Cup was missing from the full set of the Club Championship, the Scratch knockout, the Carris Bowl and the Club Cup.

Dave becomes only the 4th ever member of Rickmansworth Golf Club to achieve this feat, after the great George Caprani first achieved it, followed by Tom Moore in 2006 and Andy Pullin in 2007.

Both matches were played in a great spirit and were a credit to the Club’s two big Open Major knockout competitions.

Carlo wins the Rabbits Cup 2013

Many congratulations to Carlo Coiasi who is this year’s winner of the Rabbits Cup.

After a very close fought 17 holes against John Bradley, Carlo came to the 18th one down but levelled the game with a brilliant 20ft putt.
At the 19th, both shots went into the bunker and the scores ended up level…but on the 20th Carlo again conjured up another magnificent 20 footer and clinched the game.
A very worthy winner….well done Carlo
