Men’s match report v Batchwood (H)

A bright sunny morning greeted the teams as Rickmansworth played their inaugural match in the Herts Friendly League. Hosting the current league champions it would be a tough test for the home team. Dave Watson struck the team’s opening shot as the blustering conditions eroded much of home advantage. Batchwood scored well, and in the first four matches only Graham Farmer and Mick Rogers had out scored the opponents in their four-ball.

The blues trailed 150-158 with the last pair of Dave Miles and Denis Curran still out on the course. As the minutes ticked away, news came in they were up, but probably not by enough. The rest of the team waited anxiously, exchanging unlikely stories amongst each other and friendly conversation with our guests. Astonishingly the opposition had a disaster hole on the 18th, giving our last pair the necessary points to secure the points we needed to claim an unlikely draw 191-191.  In the warmth of the afternoon sun the team had begun its 2014 season.

Club Captain Stefan Kunka’s welcome message

Stefan Kunka was officially voted in as the new Club Captain for 2014/15. Here’s his official welcome to all members:

The start of the 2014/15 season sees me as this year’s captain. Beginning the game at the tender age of 50, I’ve been a member at the club for just over 5 years. Like many of you I’m constantly trying to improve my game and am looking forward to the season ahead.

I was still learning the game when I was given the opportunity to play for the club by captains John Jones, Denis Curran and Dave Watson and last year was vice captain to Mick Rogers, someone who always sees the bright side of life. I hope to give some of you a similar opportunity as the club plays in matches throughout the season. This year my vice is the very able Danny Simmonds who I hope can inspire some quality into our team performances. Danny will make an excellent captain next year.

Last season was memorable for the fact that Rickmansworth won the Bourne-Vanneck Trophy for the first time in the club’s history. Congratulations were rightly given to the team that stormed the qualifier and won the final by a distance. That will be a hard act to follow. Good luck to the ladies and seniors as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

The committee is hoping to change the format of a number of club events and we hope this will improve the experience of club members. Jim and the team in the pro shop are always helpful and you will save money on your golf supplies if you speak to them politely. You might want to work on your game by arranging a lesson or two with the club pro, Jon Darby. You’ll not only score better but have a more enjoyable round of golf as you learn to eradicate those persistent bad habits. I encourage you to use the golf club website to keep in touch with all club matters throughout the year.

Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust is my chosen charity, a charity involved in a number of projects throughout the local community. I hope you can help me support them through my organised events this year.

So let’s enjoying playing a few holes on summer evenings, the fading warm sunlight providing a backdrop for ever needed practice. A respectable opening shot on the first providing the start to a memorable round on a bright sunny morning. Good luck and best wishes to all club members this year.

Welcome from our new Ladies Captain

New Ladies Captain for 2014/15 – June Poppleton was officially accepted into her new role at last night’s AGM. Here’s her welcome message to members:

May I introduce myself as the new Ladies’ Captain. I have lived in Rickmansworth for 47 years, played golf for 7 years, have passed my 3 score years and 10 but am still in my mind 35. Several of our children and grandchildren play golf and my grandson’s advice is “Hit it harder, Granny” – if only I could! My husband is up at Moor Park. I do play there occasionally; but I wouldn’t swop it for our Tricky Ricky.

I am looking forward to taking up my duties as Ladies Captain with both excitement and trepidation.  Excitement anticipating the many new experiences and new people I hope to meet and enjoy in the coming year and trepidation following on the excellent captaincy of Sherril. I take this opportunity of thanking her for all her hard work and the enthusiasm she brought to all our activities..

I hope to work in closer co-operation with the men’s section of the club and hope they have the same aim.

We are always ready to welcome new members and would point out beginners are just as welcome as established players.  We have all had to swing a golf club for the first time so if there are ladies out there who would like to take up golf come along and enjoy the companionship and the fun. Our days are Monday and Wednesday at 10.00 am.

May I wish everyone involved in the club a successful and very happy year.

Tiger Roffe..

Congratulations go to Paul Roffe who has held on to win the Club’s prestigious Tiger Trophy for the 2013/14 season.

Paul won with a total of 19 points gathered over the season’s weekend monthly medals, to pip Gerald Hirst by just 1 point. Graham Farmer made a late challenge to end on 17 points to share 3rd place alongside Vice Captain Danny Simmonds.

With just one more event counting toward the Stag Trophy, it is Tom Moore who has already sealed the win with an unassailable 6 point lead heading into Tuesday’s final mid-week Medal of the 2013/14 season. Gerald Hirst currently sits in second place on 15 points, with Dominic Nichol third on 13 pts.
