Senior’s win at home

The Rickmansworth Seniors played their fourth match of the season at home to Oakland Park (29th April) and finally recorded their first win of the season 4-2. On the strength of his own view and that of several of his team, Oakland’s Captain asked me to pass on their compliments to Ricky’s green keeping staff for the excellent condition of the course.

Club Day 2014 poster

Club Day 2014 is this year being held on SATURDAY 10th MAY. The event is open to ALL members of Rickmansworth Golf Club and is a full day entertainment for you, our members.

The day will start with tea/coffee upon arrival at the clubhouse, where competitors will get their scorecards. There is NO green fee to pay – just a £10 entry fee to cover some of the costs of the day. A full 18 hole Stableford competition will start at 8.30 am and we have 52 spaces available. There may be additional tee off times should the demand arise. There are various competitions during the round such as 4 nearest the pin prizes and a straightest drive hole. There is also a 9-hole putting competition around Ricky’s 4 tiered practice green which you can do BEFORE or AFTER your round.

The overall winner of the day’s 18 hole competition will receive the Maude Banks Memorial Trophy and the star 1st prize. We will have prizes going all the way to at least 20th place, so if you’re not having your best day don’t give up – normally about 30 points will get you a prize.

Food will be provided after golf by way of sandwiches and chips on a rolling basis. You can keep an eye on the leaderboard by way of the giant scoreboard that will be updated as the day progresses.

You can sign up now – the entry sheet is on the main noticeboard in between the Ladies and Gents changing rooms.

Following the conclusion of the Club Day competition, the new Captains will perform their ceremonial drive-in’s up the first hole. We will then move back into the clubhouse where the focus will turn to congratulating the winners from last season and presenting the cups and trophies. We’re hoping this will not take too long as in past years, but we still would like to see everyone stay on for this important part of the golfing year.

Finally, we will make the presentations of the Club Day competition prizes so make sure you stick around!

An awful lot of organisation has gone and will continue to go into the running of Club Day – an event for the members. Please do your very best to support the day and stay on for the drive in’s & trophy presentations.

Men’s Carris Bowl and Club Cup draws

The draws for the Club’s prestigious annual summer knockouts have now been made. You can see the draws by logging into Master Scoreboard or checking the competition board in the Men’s changing room.

Please remember, it is the responsibility of BOTH players to arrange their matches.

Herts Friendly League – Little Hay (A)

A bright and windy day welcomed the travelling Rickmansworth team in their Herts Friendly League match at Little Hay. Mick Rogers, paired with the Captain, got play underway and scored well all match, but the pair lost their way at the 15th and were beaten by 4 points. Gerald Hirst and Paul Roffe had a strong back nine, scoring 22 points, but were unable to overhaul their 3 point half-way stage deficit. Tom Wallace, playing with Cammo, hit birdies on 3, 12 and 14 but a no-score on 18 saw the pair just lose to the opposition. Roy Prue and Graham Davies came up against a strong pairing who scored 45 points and, in spite of a birdie on the last by Graham, Ricky were now well down. The final pair of Vice Captain Danny Simmonds and Chairman Dave Miles put up a strong fight but couldn’t pull off the miracle and the team were beaten 189 pts – 205 pts.

Course successes…

The finals of the Club’s prestigious Arthur Tomkins Scratch Cup and Bert Lawrence Trophy were both played last weekend. In the Bert Lawrence Trophy Rob Camilleri was up against Denis Curran and it was Rob who played a blinder and won the trophy. His round was also good enough to win the Easter Cup with 41 points. Congratulations to Rob who has been cut 1 shot.

In the Arthur Tomkins Scratch Cup played over 36 holes, David Hirst overcame Tom Moore 9&7 to keep the trophy in the family, as his father Gerald had won it for the past two seasons. Well done David – an excellent performance.

There was also further course success at the weekend for Gerald Hirst who made an ace at the par 3 7th hole on Saturday during his Easter Cup round. Gerald so nearly repeated the feat by almost holing again on Easter Sunday at the same hole…his shot hit the pin on the second bounce and finished about 5 ft away.

Golfguard Insurance

Rickmansworth Golf Club encourages all members to take out suitable golf insurance to cover themselves each year.

The premium of £20 must be paid to the Treasurer, Gerald Hirst, by 8th May 2014. Cheques should be made payable to Rickmansworth Golf Club.

Ladies draw to start season

Rickmansworth’s Ladies Section played their first friendly match this season at Little Hay on Wednesday 16th April. On a bright and blustery day we found the course long in comparison to ours, but with some spectacular views and some equally tricky greens. We drew the match 2-2.

Seniors defeated at Haste Hill

The third match of the Seniors season was away to Haste Hill on 16th April. The gloriously sunny weather inspired the hosts a little more than the visitors. Rickmansworth lost 4½ to 1½ – a slight improvement on last year’s 5-1 defeat.
