The Lady Captain’s Golf took place on Friday 30th May. The day was fine which was a great relief especially for the Captain. We had 56 players, both men and ladies, and they came from Surrey, Worcestershire, Norfolk and our local areas. The entrance was decorated with bunting and pink balloons and looked very welcoming and a reminder to us all of the charity we were supporting. The golf was enjoyed by everyone and all were very complimentary on the condition of the course.
There were several competitions and rivalry was fierce, but fun. The men’s singles competition was won by John Jackson; the ladies singles by Jean Butler and the team competition by John Gwilt, Tom Moore and Basil Biggs. All the winners were members of the club which was excellent. The putting was won by the Captain’s son Antony Poppleton.
After the match everyone enjoyed the meal of breaded chicken, bacon and brie salad with crispy rolls, followed by profiteroles, cheesecake and rich chocolate gateaux ending with coffee and chocolates. The room was decorated in pink and looked striking. I must congratulate the staff of the Fairway Inn for an excellent meal and friendly, efficient service.
Dr Woolf from the Breast Cancer Research Unit at Mount Vernon, my chosen charity, came to present the prizes and gave us a brief talk on the excellent, pioneering work carried out by the unit.
Lady Captain's Day

Lady Captain’s Day

I had asked local companies and friends to sponsor a hole and had a wonderful response especially from Costco and, Tips and Toes  to mention just two.
I announced at the end of proceedings that we had raised £1,300 – way beyond my expectations and then a gentleman made up the amount to £1,500. A wonderful act of generosity for which I am so grateful. I hope this week to go up to Mount Vernon and present the cheque.
A very happy and successful day well worth the sleepless nights.

Aylesbury Away – match report

Torrential rain had fallen overnight and the rain continued as the Ricky team approached Aylesbury Park Golf Club where they were to meet their opponents in the away leg of the annual friendly match. A hearty breakfast awaited our players and final preparations were made before the first tee. As the team emerged from the clubhouse the clouds appeared to be dispersing and the first group set off with the promise of sun ahead.  The team included debutants Ian Mackie, paired with Rob Camilleri and Peter Maestas, paired with the Captain.

The match was tight with most games going to the 16th or 17th hole but sadly only vice-captain, Danny Simmonds and former captain Mick Rogers managed to win as the other five pairings all lost out. The match ended in a 1-5 defeat and we will have to work hard in the return match to retain the annual trophy. In spite of the result the sun emerged early on making it an enjoyable day’s golf, the course was in excellent condition and our hosts were most congenial. Thanks to all our players for putting up a spirited fight.

Next Clapham match

Our next Clapham Common match has been scheduled for Sunday 22nd June, with a 10am tee off.

Please contact Vice-Captain Danny Simmonds if you would like to play in this match.

Hawtree Trophy Count Back Defeat

On a beautiful sunny day the Ricky team played in the mixed greensomes Hawtree Trophy against Huntswood. Pairings of Roy Prue and Mary Harris and Tom Moore and Sherril Bryden playing the away leg and Stefan Kunka with in-form Pat Ladd and Danny Simmonds and Joan McLaughlin in the home leg.

All the matches were close, a slight away deficit equalled by the home result leaving the match level at 127 – 127 points. The mathematicians set to work and sadly for Ricky the team were beaten 70-65 on a nine hole count back. Lets hope for better arithmetic next year.

Ladies go down at Wexham

Rickmansworth Ladies suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Wexham Park today in their annual friendly match. However good weather, pleasant company and even a flock of tiny goslings meant the Ladies enjoyed their visit to Buckinghamshire.

Next up for the Ladies is the new Moor Park mixed match on  Monday 2nd June, then Haste Hill at home on Wednesday 4th June.

El Presidente!

Club Chairman Dave Miles today overcame in-form Graham Farmer nett 66 to nett 69 to win the final of the President’s Cup for a third time. Well done to Dave capping a memorable season in which he also won the Club Cup.

Big win for Ricky Seniors..

Although not a Friday, Tuesday 13th proved to be unlucky for Shendish Manor as Ricky Seniors completed a 6-0 whitewash at home to record their second victory of the season.
