Solid home win for Senior Men

On Monday 29th June, Rickmansworth Seniors played the return home match of the opening game of the season which we had lost away to Batchwood Hall 1-5. The result was not quite a mirror image of the away match with Ricky winning 5 and a half to a half, Batchwood’s final pair managing to avoid their team’s whitewash by finishing their match all square.

Clapham victory for the Ricky Men

Rickmansworth were up against Wexham Park in the Clapham Common Shield which was played on Saturday 27th June. The pairs were; at home – Danny Simmonds & Peter Maestas and Mick Rogers & Denis Curran. Our away pairs were: Graham Farmer & Rob Camilleri and Graham Simon & John Shamoon.

A beautiful sunny day welcomed the players at both courses. Graham & John continued their solid form with an away score of 36 points, levelling their playing partners’ score. Graham & Rob scored a respectable total of 34 points, but were 5 points down against their opponents. But it was the home teams that came up trumps. Mick & Denis were reunited and scored an amazing 44 points. Danny and Clapham debutant Peter Maestas returned with a great score of 39 points. The home team won by 20 points meaning we won by 15 overall. In the next round we are up against Horsenden Hill.

Ben Plumridge added his name to the Scratch Championship Trophy with a hard fought win in this year’s Club Championship. After a solid morning round of 70 including an eagle 3 at the par-5 2nd, Ben held a two stroke lead over recent Arthur Tomkins Scratch winner, Munir Ahmed (72), and defending club champion David Watson (74).

After a break for lunch the leading trio teed up together for the second round. The morning showers had passed and the sun appeared for a more pleasant round. Ben’s lead was cut after a lost ball on the stroke index 1 3rd hole, costing a double bogey 6. The short par 3 7th was birdied by both Ben and David as they moved ahead of Munir. Ben’s lead was then extended to 4 strokes with the final 9 holes to play after David found multiple tree problems down the left of the 9th. David kept chipping away and cut Ben’s lead to 2 strokes after picking up strokes on 13 and 15. After a miraculous par 4 from Ben on the 16th, the crucial moment came on the 17th where Ben found the front bunker and made double bogey to David’s par. Level going up the 36th hole!

Both players made the front of the green in regulation, and after short first putts, each had a 5 foot breaking putt left for par. Neither player took the chance to win, with both player’s putts just slipping past. A play off followed. The 37th hole was halved in par 3’s, and so it was to the par 5 2nd, the 38th hole of the day, where the championship was eventually to be decided.

And a fantastic way to win too! With adrenaline flowing for both players, David hit first and found the green from 241 yards. Ben launched a towering 7 iron approach in reply, but after looking good it just missed the left side of the green. Ben then played a terrific pitch up on to the green and to within 3 feet of the back right hole location. David’s first putt for eagle rolled four feet past, but just like on the 36th hole, the four footer left slid agonisingly across the cup, lipped around the hole and stayed above ground. Ben then had the chance he’d wanted, and after a deep breath, he made no mistake with his short birdie putt, to become the new Club Champion!

It was a great battle over the last 9 holes and fittingly Ben won by making a birdie. Congratulations to Ben, a very worthy Club Champion!

Honours even at Bushey

The Seniors’ tenth match of the season was played at Bushey Country Club on 23rd of June, the third of the six matches played for the Four Clubs Cup. Congratulations must go to Peter Jones who holed his third shot from 140 yards to score an eagle. The individual matches varied between tight, with a loss on the last hole and pretty one sided with a six and four win for each side. However, in the end everything balanced out for a draw with three wins each. Seniors fixture list 2015

Senior’s victory over Huntswood

Thursday 18th June saw yet another sunny day, and Rickmansworth Seniors’ golf at home to Huntswood was almost as hot as the weather! Many of the Huntswood team who had not played at Rickmansworth before were bemused by the many blind shots they had to play and baffled by the pace and slopes of the greens.

The net result was a  5-1 win for Ricky with two 7&5 wins amongst the victories. Even the losing team almost turned it into a whitewash, coming back from four down to level but then lost on the last hole. Despite the margin and bafflement, most Huntswood players said how much they had enjoyed the course and were looking forward to coming back next year.

Senior’s v Haste Hill…

The Seniors hosted Haste Hill on Monday 15th June, looking to break the away team’s run of five consecutive victories over Ricky. The weather was looking good and Ricky’s prospects looked even better when two of their players failed to turn up. However, the away team won the first three matches, but Ricky rallied and stopped the rot, coming out with a 3-3 draw. 2015 Senior’s fixture list

Recent Ladies Match reports

Wexham Park – HOME

The Ladies Section played their annual friendly match against Wexham Park on 20th May. Wexham may have been seeking reparation for our victory in the Hawtree Competition and fielded a very strong side.

Their first pair gave us a master class in golf technique and how to play Rickmansworth and were victorious 5&4, their second pair were similar and managed victory 6&5. Fortunately our third pair showed more resilience coming out victorious on 17th while our final pair shared the honours, making the final result a respectable loss for Ricky 2½-1½.

HOLE in ONE – Congratulations Sherril Bryden on her HOLE IN ONE on 3rd June.

Sherril’s first drive in the match at Haste Hill demonstrated her intentions for the day. Those who are familiar with the Haste Hill course will know their first hole is nearly as tricky as ours, but Sherill – avoiding all the hazards of ditches, trees, bunkers and angled shots headed straight for the green and into the hole. Well done Sherril on your First Hole in One!

Haste Hill – AWAY

Continuing with our Friendly Match programme we travelled to Haste Hill last Wednesday 3rd June. Sherril Bryden in our third pair thought it would be a good idea to start the match with a Hole in one, needless to say they went on to win their match.

The remaining three matches we closely contested and were “nip & tuck” all the way around. The first pair managed to win on the last putt of the last hole, the other two pairs were not as successful but the overall result was a well-deserved draw.

I would like to thank all the ladies who have put themselves forward for these matches especially those who have turned out when they could have been elsewhere or changed their arrangements at the last minute. Because of everyone’s efforts we have been able to field a full team for all of our matches to date. So thank you ladies. 2015 Ladies’s fixtures & results
