Seniors’ match updates…

Rickmansworth Seniors’ third match of the season was away to Batchwood Hall on 18th April. Despite two matches being decided on the 17th and another two on the 18th, Ricky couldn’t muster even a half so suffered a whitewash going down 0-6.

The Seniors’ second home match of the season on 26th April against Oakland Park offered an early chance to bounce back from the mauling in the previous match. Although traffic chaos caused long delays all players managed to get through and off not too late. Ricky’s reputation for trickiness was enhanced by the fickle weather varying from warm sunshine to bitter winds and even a brief snow shower. Confidence was restored – just, with a 3½-2½ win to Rickmansworth.

Captain’s News

The season is now well under way and I would like to thank you for all the support that I and my vice-captain Peter have had in club matches. It makes our job so much easier when we have lots of support so please continue putting your names down, it is much appreciated. We have had a great start to the season winning the first three Herts Friendly League matches, the last one being away at Little Hay, a great result. We also had a good result at our annual friendly match, away at Meyrick Park, which finished 3-3 giving us a great advantage in the return leg at home. Unfortunately, we couldn’t replicate the success of last year in the Clapham Common losing in the first round to a strong Wexham Park team by just 3 points.

Ricky’s first historic away win in HFL…

Having already recorded 2 home wins so far this season in the Herts Friendly League (against Batchwood and Bushey), Rickmansworth hit the road for the away game at Little Hay. Away days are always well enjoyed but difficult to actually overturn home advantage and record a win. Not today though! Vice-Captain Peter Maestas led from the front with partner John Shamoon earning a great draw in the top match. Little Hay hit the front with a victory in the 2nd match over Stefan Kunka & Mick Gornicki, but Danny Simmonds & Graham Davies surged back to give Ricky a 2 point lead. In the 4th match Dave Watson & Dave Miles sealed a draw on the 18th green, and it was left to Mick Rogers and Bernie White to win the anchor match by a terrific 6 points to give Ricky its first ever away victory in the HFL – 203 pts-195 pts. A terrific effort by all who played, as every shot really does count. We look forward to welcoming Little Hay back to RGC later in the season.

Meyrick Park report

Rickmansworth Golf Club made the trip down to the south coast for their annual match against Meyrick Park in Bournemouth on Saturday. The weather held out for the groups to tee off after a hearty breakfast. The match didn’t start off as the Captain had planned, by losing the first 3 matches. A spirited come back by the next 2 groups who won both their matches brought the match back to 3-2 down, leaving it all to the last group of Ian Mackie and debutante David Grace. The match went down to the 18th hole with Ian and David coming back victorious leveling the match at 3-3, a brilliant away result.

I would like to thank all the players who made the trip and well done. A mention to John Shamoon and Mick Rogers who won the sweep with 42 points, but lost their match 3&2 showing how high the quality of golf was.

Senior’s beaten away…

Ricky Seniors’ first away match of the season took the team to Chartridge Park on 11th April under the captaincy of Martin Holden. Although no less than four of the matches were decided on the last hole, the fixture put an end to the Seniors’ one match ‘winning streak’ with a chastening 5½ – ½ defeat. Clive Bennett and Ken Pragnell saved us from the whitewash.

Seniors’ match victory

In the first match of the season on April 5th, at home to Little Hay, Captain for the day Bob Horton led from the front by winning his match. His example inspired a win for Ricky 4½ to 1½. Coincidentally this was a repeat of last season’s score, getting Ricky off to a good start in trying to regain the Four Clubs Trophy from last year’s winners Shendish Manor.
