NAPGC Clapham Common Match Report – played on 23-Jul-2017

This year’s third round of the Men’s NAPGC Clapham Common Match was played against Ruislip Golf Club. The Clapham Common Platinum Shield and Ellis Cup is a Men’s Greensomes Stableford competition. The competition is run with 3 teams at home and 3 teams away. We felt we had a strong team going into this match, but we always knew that this one in particular would be difficult to win. We teed off at both clubs at 09:00. Rickmansworth were 3 points up at home 101 to 98, which we did not think was a big enough margin to take the match. Once the away scores came in, it was clear that Ruislip were the winners on this occasion, with a total of 209 points for Ruislip and 194 points for Rickmansworth. A big thanks goes out to all the players for their support, and we will be back in 2018.

Rickmansworth v Aylesbury Park GC Friendly Match Report – played on 22-Jul-2017

Once again this match seemed to be one of the best matches in our calendar, and just simply attracts the players. With a fantastic full English breakfast, we were off to the first tee. Being 3½ to 2½ down from the first round at Aylesbury, Rickmansworth had to play well to retrieve or retain the trophy. The teams started to come in and it was clear that there would be a win for Rickmansworth, the question was by how much? Once all the teams were accounted for, Rickmansworth had 5 wins to Aylesbury’s 1 win, and thus Rickmansworth came out on top by a total score for the two rounds of 7½ to 4½ . Our sweep went to Martin Bartlett and Jake Jacobson, who came in with a whopping 47 points. Thanks to everyone from both clubs for making the day a roaring success.

Seniors’ matches update

The Seniors played successive matches against, and with, the Ladies on consecutive Mondays, 17th and 24th July. Unusually, the match against the Ladies was played with thirteen players in each team at the request of the Ladies. Due to miscommunication one of the men did not turn up so they only had 12 players. Thirteen proved to be an unlucky number for the Ladies as the Senior Men retained the Mallick-Holden Trophy.

The second match was a mixed match against Oakland Park. On paper Oakland seemed to have a strong team with their players’ handicaps averaging about four strokes lower than the Rickmansworth golfers. However home advantage more than levelled the playing field, particularly with Ricky’s tricky greens resulting in a 6-0 whitewash for Rickmansworth. Ricky saved the best to the end with the last pair out, Ann Paris and Syd Carter securing the biggest victory by 5 and 4.

Seniors defeated away, but still going well in Four Clubs Trophy

On Wednesday 13th July the Seniors played their fourth match in the Four Club Trophy at Little Hay under the captaincy of Tom Moore. It was a close match with all but one game being decided on either the 17th or 18th. While the score was an improvement on last year’s 2-4 defeat, Ricky still went down by 2½ to 3½. This leaves the Four Clubs League looking as though it may be heading for another tight finish between Ricky and Shendish Manor, at Shendish on September 5th. Little Hay have completed their fixtures and have six points, the same as Shendish who have just one game left against Ricky. We have two games left, home to Bushey CC who have four points the same as Ricky and the Shendish match. A win against Bushey of 4-2 or better would leave us needing just to tie against Shendish as we would win a tie-break with more individual matches won.

Captain’s Half Year Update

Captain’s day 2017:

Firstly, it was fantastic to see so many of the members out for Captain’s day, you really made the day positively fantastic, so pat yourselves on the back as we also raised £546.60 for Cancer Research UK. So a BIG, BIG, thank you to all who very generously gave up your time, and cash, to make the day a great success. I would also like to say a special thank you to Steve Milligan who setup the Active Leader Board for the day, which made scoring simple and in real time.

Friendly Matches:

We are now starting to play the second round of our friendly matches with Meyrick Park, Aylesbury Park and Richmond Park. Unfortunately we have had to postpone the return match v Meyrick Park, this match will now be played when the date has been re-arranged. We are about to play Aylesbury Park, maybe for the last time as HS2 will be digging up their golf course in the not too distant future. Rickmansworth is doing well in these competitions and with your support we will be victorious.

Herts Friendly League Matches:

The Herts Friendly League is also rolling into the second half of the season and Rickmansworth will be hosting several clubs over the next 5 weeks, so we have a very busy July and early August. I hope that the excellent support I have had so far this year, will continue over this 5 week busy period and beyond, so we can complete a very hectic schedule over these next few weeks. You can check the Rickmansworth league results by visiting the Little Hay Golf Club pages and clicking on the “Herts Friendly League” button at the bottom left of the page.

NAPGC Hawtree Match:

This was the first of the NAPGC matches, which is a Mixed Greensomes Stableford competition and this year it was played away at Haste Hill Golf Club. Unfortunately this year we did not go through to the next round but we will be back next year to perhaps go further in this competition.

NAPGC Bourne-Vanneck Shield and Cup:

This is a Men’s Club Team Championship match, Rickmansworth fielded an A team (low handicaps) and a B team (mid Handicaps). The A team was doing well but got pipped at the last and finished fourth, which is a very good result considering there was a high standard of competition. Ricky can also take away the feel good factor of posting the lowest nett round of the day out of all competitors. So, once again, we will be back next year to try again.

NAPGC Clapham Common Platinum Shield and Ellis Cup 2017:

Rickmansworth was victorious over Farnham Park which has given us an additional challenge of organising the next match v Ruislip within the required time scales of 23rd of July. We now have a good team for this match, and while it will be very challenging, we hope to come through and progress to the next round.

Captains Note:

Seems that this year is flying past and no sooner did my Captaincy start, it is now in the second half of the season. I have had great support from all the players so far this year, so a big thank you from the Captain for your time and some excellent scoring in the Club Matches. I am also very glad to see that we are getting quite a few new members and I hope that they will enjoy the club, the competitions, and the comradeship that I have since I joined in 2012, I think, the time has gone so quickly. Lastly, I wish you all a very good second half of the golfing season and hope to see you on the course, or at the Fairway Inn for a chat and a coffee.

Rickmansworth v Stevenage Match Report – played on 15-July-2017

Having played Stevenage away not so long ago, and with a small margin loss at the away venue, Rickmansworth were confident that we could do well at home. With a slightly dampening sky, we teed off with high expectations. Rickmansworth lost the first match by 3 points, against very good competition from the Stevenage Captain and his partner, however when the other matches started to come in, it was clear that Rickmansworth were going to be victorious. In the end Rickmansworth won by 25 points with scores of 227 to Rickmansworth and 202 to Stevenage. There were some very high scores on the day, and with a score of 48 points for Martin Bartlett and Archie Ahmed, it was looking good for winning the sweep. However, our last match, Mick Rogers and Peter Bartlett rolled in with a score of 49 points and took the sweep win by a single point. Well done to all the teams for their high scores and winning on home ground, and once again a big thanks to all for your excellent support.
