HFL Rickmansworth v Bushey Away Match Report – played on 23-Sep-2017

The team gathered at Bushey Country Club for the second leg of our local derby, which is always a competitive affair. The weather was looking rather glum, but we were assured by the ever so accurate weather people, that it was to brighten up mid-morning. The gun went off, and we were away. The first match lost to Bushey by 1 point, match 2 was a draw, match 3 lost by 2 points and match 4 lost by a point. So far, all the matches were extremely close. At this stage Rickmansworth were only 4 points down and a good final round could swing the result in our favour. The final match of the day unfortunately lost to Bushey by 3 points, so it was a win to Bushey by 7 points. Final scores were Rickmansworth 187 points to Bushey’s 194 points. However, as we won at home by 14 points, the cup comes back to Rickmansworth as we won the aggregate by 7 points. The sweep was won by Mick Rogers and Dave Miles, again, with a healthy score of 41 points. Well done gentlemen, and once again a big thank you to all who played on the day.

Friendly Home Match v Richmond Park – played on 16-Sep-2017

This was the fifth of our 6 friendly matches and with a 4½ to 1½ deficit it was going to take a very good round from everyone to win the cup for the second consecutive year. Rickmansworth had a good team for this match and being on home ground gave us a small advantage. The first team came in with a win, which gave us a good start to the day. Teams 2, 3 and 4 also came in with wins and at this point the 4½ to 1½ deficit was reversed into a 1 point advantage. Our team 5 did not do so well however, so now we were all square with the aggregate score of 5½ to 5½. Once again, down to the last match to decide if the cup stays at Ricky, or goes to Richmond for the next 12 months. It turned out that the last match was not only down to the last hole, but the last putt, which was sunk from about 25 feet by the Rickmansworth duo, to clinch a very important point and give us a 6½ to 5½ win, and the match cup stays at Rickmansworth for another year. The sweep was won by Dave Miles and Mick Rogers with a healthy 44 points, on top of their excellent match win. Once again, a big thank you to all the players, as without your support these matches would not be possible.

Rickmansworth v Panshanger Home HFL Match Report – played on 09-Sep-2017

No mix up of venues this time, and after a short summer break, Rickmansworth were at home on the tricky course that usually brings us a win. Having said that, we took a real pasting when we went to Panshanger so the match was definitely not going to be an easy one. First match out lost by 5 points and it was looking like another difficult day on the golf course. Second match came in with a fantastic win by 12 points, so maybe the golfing gods would smile on Rickmansworth this day and we would come away with a win. Matches 3 and 4 were very tight and it was down to the last to either win, or not lose by too many points, for Rickmansworth to take the win. The final scores for the day were, 207 points to Rickmansworth and 199 points to Panshanger, so a very satisfying win for the Ricky Team. The sweep was won by match 2, Peter Bartlett and Bernie White with 47 points! Thanks again to all the players for their continued support.

Captains Away Day 2017 played on 08-Sep-2017

This year’s Captain’s Away Day was played at The Old Fold Manor Golf Club in Barnet, Herts. The club has a long history and when Old Fold opened, life expectancy in England was 50. Women had no vote, there were 5 dollars to the pound, cigarettes were one old penny for 20, a pint was 1p, and the biggest single class of employment was domestic service – there were over 2 million butlers, footmen and maids, etc. That was 1910. This course is also used for The Open Qualification, so it boasts a high pedigree. We were expecting 24 players on the day, two could not make it due to personal circumstances and one turned up unexpectedly, so we had a healthy 23 players on the day. Unfortunately the weather I ordered, sunshine and 23 degrees, was replaced with heavy clouds and regular bouts of rain. This however, did not dampen the spirits of the 23 golfers who took to the course at 10:02. Following a swift change of clothing into something more respectable, with some wearing the full suit and tie ensemble, came the end of round meal of ham, egg and chips. There were several competitions on the day, including Nearest the Pin, Nearest the Pin in Two Shots and Longest Drive, as well as the winner’s prize, runner-up and third place. The following golfers were the winners on the day:

Overall Winner: Martin Bartlett with 42 points

Runner-Up: Jake Jacobson with 39 points

Third Place: David Wills on count-back with 34 points

Nearest the Pin: Peter Bartlett

Nearest the Pin in Two Shots: Martin Bartlett

Longest Drive: Martin Bartlett

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for supporting the 2017 Captain’s Away Day, and for making it a very enjoyable event.
