Captain’s Day report

Rickmansworth Golf Club awoke last weekend to the sound of thunder, as lightning lit up the early morning darkness.  Heavy rain beat down leaving the course with an early autumnal soaking and the possibility of the Captain’s Day event being a wash out. As 8 am approached, the rain eased and golfers arrived at the clubhouse preparing to take on the course and challenge for the prizes on offer. The first group went out hoping the last drizzle of rain would end and the greens would welcome a well aimed putt.

Home baked Captain cake was handed out between holes 3 and 9 as players made their way around the course hoping to pile up the points and give a good account of themselves. After completing the 18th hole, a bunker and two long putt challenges lay in wait and hopefully provided a lighthearted end to the competitive part of the day.

As players tucked into the light lunch and joked about all their bad luck, the points were tallied; the leader board revealed the scores. John Shamoon took first prize with 43 points, Graham Simon was second with 41 points just ahead of Colin Turfus in third on count back. The ladies prize was won by Joan McLaughlin with 27 points. Well done to the 4 nearest the pin winners and the winners of the long putt and bunker challenges.

The day raised just over £200 for the Captain’s charity and I’d like to thank all those who took part and contributed to making the day a success. Stefan Kunka, Captain 2014.
