Rickmansworth v Meyrick Park Friendly Away Match Report Saturday 29th September 2018

We went into this match with a 4½ – ½ lead from the home leg, so we knew we had given ourselves a good chance. The match was played out of a total of 11 points as Meyrick had another match on the same date as our home leg. The home leg being only 5 pairs but the away leg being 6 pairs, we needed 1½ points to secure the win.

We all arrived down to the club early on Saturday to spend the morning watching the Ryder Cup. This put us all in the mood for the afternoon on the course.

After a full breakfast we all headed out to the first tee which is a very hard 244 yard par 3. The course is a great test all the way round and with the fairways being very dry and bare still from all the hot weather it made it a very tough day.

My partner and I lost our match 5&4 and so did the group behind. I was getting a little nervous but was confident that the strong pair of Ben Plumridge and Dave Miles would bring in a point, and they did exactly that with a 6&5 win. This secured the tie at a minimum.

The next 2 groups went the way of Meyrick meaning the score was at 5½ to 4½ and leaving us needing half a point from the last group of Rob Camilleri and Jonathan Radford.

Word filtered into the clubhouse that the Ricky pair were 1 up going into the last hole and therefore I knew we had at least a half point. By the time they came in they had won the last meaning they won 2 up and we won the overall trophy 6½ – 4½.

Our sweep was won with a fantastic away points total of 46 points by Ben Plumridge and Dave Miles who kindly donated their winnings to my charity.

The fantastic day was finished off with sandwiches and chips in the clubhouse and then a very enjoyable evening out in Bournemouth.

This brings the end to my matches this season with just the Needle Shield to go and would like to thank the players in this match and all players that have been a fantastic support all year.
